light and shadow of dictatorship

There are many historic figures who are judged as the great names of history or embellished historical figures. And Francisco Franco is a typical example of this. He was a dictator of Spain from 1939 to his death in 1975. Having a military background, he was the youngest general in Europe in the 1920s.

His personal dictatorship began after Spanish Civil War. Over 300,000 people were dead during the war and 630,000 people were dead because of the disease and poverty. This is only a part of whole victims. During the 36 years of his dictatorship, local diversity and cultural development were oppressed.

On the other hand, he is judged as the great man of history. In fact, in the 1940s and 1950s Spain was tormented by poverty due to the Civil War. However, Francisco Franco assigned technocrats to expand the economy and to develop the industry. It was successful. In 1960, Spain achieved decent economic growth and brought richness in Spain.

After Franco's death, there was a great movement for democracy. The Left and the Right began to fight against each other. The people were, however, nervous of unstable society. Therefore, they chose stability and order rather than freedom and justice. They passed the 'treaty of oblivion' to make the society in order and just to concentrate on their present and future. Of course, nowadays many people try to shed new light on their past. But at that time, just after the death of Franco, it was inevitable choice to the Spain.

Dictatorships is, of course, to be criticized in that it suppress the rights and liberties of their people. But as for Franco and former president Park Chung-hee of Korea, they commonly have both sides. There are many thesis about the comparison between Franco and president Park of Korea because both are commonly dictators and also they accomplished great economic growth in their countries. By comparing both historic figures, it might be useful to understand both countries.

  1. Hello this is Jinsu Park from your class

Nice to read about spain. since i'm interested in.

First of all, I couldn't find a cause and effect in this article. Also, you mention president Park in the last sentence. I think it wuold be better for you to mention in the first and compare both dictator in the article.

You start a new point in the last paragraph. So it confuses me.

Also in grammar, "It was successful. In 1960, Spain achieved decent economic growth and brought richness in Spain." this sentence needs changing. Spain brought richness in Spain? is strange.

Generally, you have some grammar errors. So it would be better to change grammar error.

This article is like a story of Franco not a cause and effect of dictator or anything.
So it would be better to make a cause and effect of dictatorship with economic reason or any other reasons.

Thanks for the writing and the information of Franco.

Thank you for a nice writing. To start with, I don't think you have a clear point of yourself on how Franco should be judged. It was a nice idea to introduce different perspectives about him, however I think it would have been better if you introduced your opinion and supporting ideas about him. Also, I do not think there is a vlear cause effect. I think it could be better if you use more connectors to show the cause and effect. Lastly, it would be great if you restate or summarize your points in the conclusion.
    Thank you for your writing!:)

He was a dictator of Spain from 1939 to his death in 1975. Having a military background, he was the youngest general in Europe in the 1920s.

Military authorities, Catholic churches and conservative parties were against the Second Republic. In this context, Franco seized power in a military coup and this let to a Civil War. His personal dictatorship began after this Spanish Civil War. Over 300,000 people were dead during the war and 630,000 people were dead because of the disease and poverty. This is only a part of whole victims. During the 36 years of his dictatorship, local diversity and cultural development were oppressed.

However, Francisco Franco assigned technocrats to expand the economy and to develop the industry. It was successful. In 1960, Spain achieved decent economic growth and brought richness in Spain. Therefore, many people still judged him as a great name of history in Spain.

There are many thesis about the comparison between Franco and president Park because both are commonly judged as dictators and also they accomplished great economic growth in their countries. By comparing both historic figures, it might be useful to understand both countries and also think again about dictators.
