| Effects of the Yellow Dust Have you ever heard about Koreans planting trees in Chinese Gobi Desert? Actually, quite a lot of Korean organizations including National Forestry Administration have been planting trees there since 1998. If you think of yellow dust for a second, it is no wonder that they have invested so much in planting trees in Gobi desert, far from the country. Every spring, Far East Asian countries, specifically Korea and Japan, suffer from the effects of Yellow Dust which contain industrial pollutants from Northern China and Mongolia. The main effects of Yellow dust are desertification, health problems and reduced visibility. First of all, when yellow dust occurs in the deserts of Mongolia and China, desertification accelerates in these areas. High-speed surface winds or sandstorms take soil away, making the fertile soil dry. As a result, all kinds of plants cannot survive in such a dry place; as vegetation is destroyed, desertification accelerates. In fact, China has lost 15.9% of its land, and in case of Mongolia, the number of the kinds of plants decreased by 25%. Secondly, yellow dust causes various health problems such as respiratory diseases, eye diseases and allergies in the affected areas. As fine particles included in yellow dust worsen chronic bronchitis of smokers and cause respiratory diseases in infants and the elderly who are more vulnerable to infection. Therefore, people, especially those who are already with respiratory infections, are advised to minimize outdoors activities and remain indoors. Also, yellow dust reduces visibility as dusts block sunlight. As the fine particles spread into air and blanket the sky with contaminants, it obstructs our field of vision. As a result, traffic accidents increase and flights are cancelled. Yellow dust has become a seasonal and global problem that affects people's life all around the world. It has three main effects, which are desertification, health problems and reduced visibility. It worsens year after year; therefore, now we should join our hands to help each other and to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of Yellow dust.
