Have you ever throw some food at others? In Spain, you can throw tomatoes at others during the Tomato War Festival, La Tomatina. This festival is especially famous in Korea because a huge company, Samsung used this festival in their TV advertising. This Spanish summer festival, La Tomatina is held every year on the last Wednesday of August in Bunol, Spain. This was originated in 1944 when tomato price dived seriously. So the angry farmers begun to throw tomatoes to councilor, and this has been maintained until now as a festival. Even though La Tomatina looks a simple festival, there are also stages and some rules that participants should follow.
First, you have to wear clothes that put on around the house and flip flops so that you do not have to buy there. And also you can wear goggles to aim the tomato exactly at others. Then pay the entrance fee about 10 euro. This festival was for free till two years ago, but it came to charge admission fee because of serious economic crisis in Spain.
Then, you have to climb a tree which is located at the center of the plaza. The tree trunk is oiled before it started and the Spanish ham, jamon, is hanging from the tree. You have to take that jamon off from the tree, but as the tree trunk has oiled, it is very hard to succeed. Nevertheless, if someone succeeds, you can hear a loud sound of horns that indicates the festival has started.
Lastly, after hearing the sound of horns you can enjoy the festival for about 120 minutes. Large trunks will pour over a million of tomatoes into the street and people will begin to throw the ripe, red tomatoes at one another. After the festival ends, not only the street but the external walls of the building will all look dirty with red color and many people worry about this. But, the official of the festival will clean them up and the thing is that the acidity of the tomatoes actually make the streets look clan and shiny until next year's festival.
This huge festival, La Tomatina, achieved the fame and many other countries try to held similar kinds of festivals. For example, there is also a tomato festival in HwaCheon in Korea that you can enjoy. However, it is not yet promoted like the festival in Spain. As Spain has over a thousand festivals every year and arouse the passion every day of the year, I wish Korea also promote many festivals to gather people from all around the world.
