 <Drink smart-drinking tips for 2014 freshmen>

           New school year means meeting new people, and attending drinking parties is one way of meeting new people. Everyone is excited to see new faces, but for some freshmen, drinking parties can be a burden. Especially for first-time drinkers and poor-drinkers, alcoholic beverage itself is a nightmare because they are afraid of drinking too much. However, you can overcome the fear of heavy drinking by remembering these three tips: eat something before and during drinking, drink water and drink slow.

             First, fill up your stomach before and during drinking. If you start drinking on an empty stomach, not only the alcohol absorption rate goes up but the blood alcohol level skyrockets. Therefore, it is best to have a meal before you start drinking. However, there are some occasions when you do not have enough time to fill up your stomach. If this is the case, focus on the side dishes. Snacks with high dietary fiber such as fruit and salad are the ideal side dishes. Try to avoid salty, spicy snacks such as French fries because they only make you drink more.

             Another method you can use is to drink plenty of water. This is extremely useful when you do not have time to eat before drinking and there is not much to eat as side dishes. When water enters your stomach, it dilutes alcohol and makes you feel full, so the actual consumption of alcohol decreases. I have seen many freshmen take hangover-relief-energy drinks instead of water. Nevertheless, a research in 2010 showed that the effect of these drinks cannot be trusted. Only water can prevent your body from dehydration, thus making it the number one hangover-relief drink.

             Drinking slow can also be an effective measure you can take from getting drunk. I know this can be hard for Korean freshmen because Korean drinking culture demands people to drink fast. However, if you drink bottoms up every time, the amount of alcohol that is delivered to the brain cell increases and the liver loses the ability to digest alcohol. So if you care about your body, try to divide drinking. Furthermore, talking while drinking can really help. It is known that 10% of the alcoholic ingredient is discharged through breathing, eventually making you drink slower.

             Drinking cannot be separated from college students these days. It is a way to make friends, a place to show oneself, and many more. Although drinking parties can be fun, it is important to know your limits and never go too far. If you want to enjoy your time at the party and want to be remembered as a well-mannered freshmen, make sure that you do not drink on an empty stomach, continuously drink water and drink slow. As the Korean saying goes, 'too much is as bad as too little'.
