Carnival of Venice

 

   What comes to your mind if you think about Venice, Italy? Some of you might imagine handsome Italian guys singing on gondola(traditional Venetian rowing boat), but I'm sure that many people think about various kinds of masks, which is the symbol of Venetian carnival. It is not too much to say that Venice is the city of Carnival; about 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for Carnival. Carnival of Venice is the biggest festival in Italy and is one of the 10 festivals of the world. It is held in the end of January and lasts for about 10 days. During the Carnival, various festivals take place around the San Marco Square.


   The first festival is Maria Festival. It originated from the tradition that Venitian governor gave jewelries to 12 beautiful but poor girls as a dowry. Today, it has the meaning of traditional clothing parade; selected girls march down the street wearing traditional costumes escorted by other people. When arriving at San Marco Sqaure, one girl is chosen as the angel of the year in front of the audience and she will take a role of angel in Flight of the Angel Ferstival.


   In the following festival, Flight of the Angel Festival, the chosen girl dressed as an angel flies acrosses the San Marco Square at a height of more than 20 meters tied to a rope. It has the meaning of expressing respect to the governor, and tens of thousands of people gather in the square to watch the event.


   The last and the most famous festival of Carnival is mask festival which is held in the last weekend of carnival period. Not only local people but also visitors stride down the street wearing all kinds of beautiful and unusual masks and costumes. The contest of the most beautiful mask is held in the last day of Carnival and the world's top fashion designers participate as judges.


   The Carnival of Venice is colored with various kinds of festivals including Maria Festival, Angel Festival and Mask Festival. People around the world visit Venice and enjoy this Carnival with the 900-year history.

    1. What I liked about your writing is that I could know what your topic is very cleary.

    2 Your main point seems to be introducing the three kinds of festivals in Venice.

    3. Actually, your sentences seem to be all explanation or defenition, so I could not get message or feeling but I could understand and learn cleary about the festival.

    4. As the writing was full of explanation, I could not find any parts that could not understand.

    5. Your writing is clear, simple and well-written, however, it might have been better if you have added some kind of expression. Your writing seems to be too stiff, how about writing your feeling or your expression. Thank you for giving me a chance to read your essay :)

  2. I love your writing because I had been to Venice too. It was really fun at that time too. Your writing illustrate the image of the Carnival very well. We can easily found out how will the Carnival looks. But I think that it would be better if you give more concentration on conclusion. You can organize all 3 body paragraph at conclusion but you didn't. If you change that conclusion, that will be better writting.

The contest of the most beautiful mask takes place in the last day of Carnival. Both traditional masks and modern masks are submitted, and the world's top fashion designers participate as judges.

    The Carnival of Venice is colored with various kinds of festivals including Maria Festival, Angel Festival and Mask Festival. People around the world visit Venice and enjoy this Carnival with the 900-year history. In my opinion, the secret for the popularity of Carnival of Venice may the fact that it has pursued the harmony of tradition and the modernity. And I’m quite sure that it will exist forever as one of the world’s best carnivals.
