Have you ever seen the articles about copying design or hacking the software? It looks like a serious problem nowadays because it makes an enormous loss. However, this is what we do often in the aspect of intellectual property rights infringement. We often listen to music by downloading for free on the websites and often copy the books instead of buying them. In my opinion, these kind of acts are what should be punished strictly by law for three reasons; personal development, industrial development and to prompt steady creation of intellectual works.
First of all, at the personal level, there might be no development any more. There was a survey that 41.9 percent of university students tried to plagiarize books or other sources when they are in trouble writing the report or any assignments. Those students said they did not even feel any sense of guilt because they do not know exactly what the plagiarism is. However, this is just like the stealing other people's property. If students keep doing this, then they will not try to write anything by themselves and this might result the absence of individual development. There are already so many resources on the internet and not to copying them for the individual progress, this kind of act like plagiarism should be punished strictly.
Also, intellectual property rights infringement can hinder national development. Specifically, the high-tech industry is getting more and more important in advanced countries. However, copying the design of high-tech devices and making illegal copies of software become pervasive. Electronic companies like Samsung and Apple are still caught in legal battles with their design. And this legal war between Samsung and Apple costs hundreds of millions of won, which means simply copying the design can result those amount of loss to the company. High-technology creates huge added values and this led to a national development nowadays. Therefore, illegal copying or hacking should be prohibited by law.
Finally, intellectual properties should be protected to prompt steady creation of intellectual works. Just imagine that one company invested billions of dollars to create a new product and finally it came out after ten years of research. But then, other companies are making similar products with no effort and no money. Of course, I agree that heightening competition between the companies spur the growth of products. But like the example of that company, if every company are copying with ease, then none of the companies will try to create a new product. Then, it will stop the steady creation of intellectual works.
Even though Korea has many large companies like LG and SamSung, there is no strong notion of intellectual property to most of the citizens. We get angry if we heard that other companies copied our company's product and that made a lot of loss to our nation. But we copy books and download movies and music so easily. This is a real contradiction. I think education of intellectual property should be done from a young age and what is more I think the best way to imprint this kind of notion is to protect those works by law strictly.
